5 Activities to Try With Your Teen

Getting close to your teenager can sometimes feel nothing short of challenging. Between your age gap and different interests, it can be tough trying to find common ground. However, building a bond with your teen is critical not only for their emotional well-being but also for your future relationship once they’re adults.

Instead of just assuming your relationship is doomed during the teen years because of the generational gap, it’s more important than ever to engage in activities that bring you closer. Here are some ideas for you to consider that can strengthen your connection with your teen.

Create a Book Together

When children are younger, they love reading stories with their parents. It’s fun to transport them to a different world through the power of their imagination. However, as you get older, sometimes it can be even more fulfilling to create the story yourself. Creating a book together can be a fantastic way to expand your imagination and create something meaningful together as a team. You could even print copies of the book and give it to other family members as gifts.

Go Outdoors

There’s nothing like an outdoor day with your teen. Whether you decide to go hiking or even go for a bike ride, going outdoors is the perfect way to bond. While you’re at it, pack a picnic and enjoy a nice lunch in the fresh air. Stepping outside of your regular routine and environment can invite new conversations that you might not have otherwise had.

Cooking

Cooking is more than just an activity you can do together— it’s a life skill that can be incredibly valuable to your teen as they get older. Invite them into the kitchen and get them involved during the cooking process. Even teaching them something simple like how to make pasta is a fun and practical activity to do together.

Movie Night

Movie night is a great way to introduce your teen to your childhood favorites. You can choose the movie one week and allow them to choose a movie the next week. While you’re at it, consider transforming your living room into a huge cozy home theater with popcorn and fuzzy blankets included. This is a relaxed, no-pressure way to enjoy time with your teen and also discover each other’s interests. You may find that movies you would never consider watching on your own are actually super enjoyable with your teen.

Volunteer

A great way to spend time with your teen and also give back to your community is by volunteering together. You’ll find that there are many opportunities to volunteer in your community, whether at a local animal shelter or a community center. This sets a positive example for your teen that it’s important to give back to the community and make a difference in the world as a whole.

On top of that I was blogging about my family, travels, and home whenever I could squeeze in some downtime and as a means of additional income. While I’ve always loved both jobs and never wanted to let either of them go, I finally made a change in my life. Read More…
